Mission Profile

The Atlas F OV1 was a specialized launch configuration derived from the Atlas F ICBM, adapted to carry small OV1-series experimental research satellites to low Earth orbit using a minimal modification of the standard Atlas F booster. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 118 tonnes, its two-to-three-stage configuration generated 1,630 kN of thrust and first flew in April 1968 under the Atlas ICBM Program. The Atlas F OV1 exemplified the cost-effective strategy of repurposing decommissioned ICBMs to support the growing demand for small satellite experimental launches in the late 1960s.
