Mission Profile

The Atlas F SVS (Satellite Velocity Stage) was a derivative of the Atlas F ICBM adapted as a suborbital test vehicle with a specialized upper stage for reentry vehicle testing and satellite velocity simulation. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 118 tonnes, its stage-and-a-half configuration generated 1,630 kN of thrust and first flew in June 1977 under the Atlas ICBM Program. The Atlas F SVS represented the continuing legacy of ICBM hardware repurposed for advanced research missions after the Atlas F's retirement from its original strategic deterrence role.
