Mission Profile

LauncherOne was an air-launched, two-stage small satellite rocket developed by Virgin Orbit, designed to be released from a modified Boeing 747 carrier aircraft called Cosmic Girl at altitude over the Pacific Ocean. Standing 21.3 m long with a 1.6 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 25,700 kg, it generated 327 kN of first-stage thrust and could deliver 500 kg to low Earth orbit. After a failed first attempt in May 2020, LauncherOne successfully reached orbit in January 2021 and completed four additional successful missions before Virgin Orbit declared bankruptcy in 2023, ending a novel chapter in air-launch small satellite services.
