Mission Profile

The Tsyklon (Tsiklon-2A) was an early Soviet two-stage orbital launch vehicle derived from the R-36 ICBM, designed for the deployment of military reconnaissance, electronic intelligence, and ocean surveillance satellites. Standing 39.3 m tall with a 3 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 178 tonnes, it generated 2,740 kN of first-stage thrust and could deliver 2,800 kg to low Earth orbit. First launched in October 1967, the Tsyklon family proved highly reliable over its operational life and served as the foundation for the improved Tsyklon-2 and Tsyklon-3 variants that flew into the 2000s.
