Mission Profile

The Atlas E Trident was a specialized suborbital launch vehicle derived from the decommissioned Atlas E ICBM, repurposed to test the Trident I submarine-launched ballistic missile's reentry vehicle under realistic flight conditions. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of approximately 118 tonnes, its stage-and-a-half propulsion system generated 1,630 kN of thrust. First flying in March 1968 under the Atlas ICBM Program, it demonstrated the practical versatility of surplus ICBM hardware for advanced weapons testing and atmospheric reentry research.
