RAAF Woomera Range Complex Launch Area 8
🇦🇺LA-8
Mission Profile
Launch Area 8 (LA-8) at RAAF Woomera Range Complex in South Australia was a sounding rocket and research pad used for small scientific and atmospheric research rockets including SPARTA multi-stage sounding rockets and Aerobee liquid-propellant sounding rockets conducting upper atmosphere research from the 1960s onward. The Woomera range's combination of favorable latitude, isolation, and established infrastructure made it attractive for international sounding rocket campaigns, and LA-8 supported Australian, British, and American upper atmosphere research programs. The facility contributed to ionospheric research, meteorological studies, and cosmic ray investigation that formed part of the scientific baseline for subsequent satellite programs.
